This little car started the next generation for volkswagon Created in 1975 it was designed as a market stratagy to replace the badly selling 1st generation beetle in the U.S.A.

It had a 4-cylinder water-cooled engine that could also compete against Japaneese economy cars. This car took four years to catch on when sales went up in 1979, during the oil crisis. In 1978 VW built a plant in Pensylvania and started US production. It was hailed as the first foreign built car on US soil.

The design never changed during it's 10 year history, but it was constantly being improved. In July, 1984 the rabbit ended it's production streak and was replaced by the Volkswagon Golf. **If you really must have a new model of this car, they are still manufactured in South Africa.**
