Subaru drove home the point that they wanted All Wheel Drive passenger cars, especially the ones they manufactured to be part of the market. Because of this idea, in 1998 they offered AWD as the only available drive system across its entire model line. With a rally racing-derived AWD system and the porsche "boxer" engine included in each model the outback wagons have been the reason for Subaru's sales success in the late nineties.

The 2002 Subaru has expanded 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine to the Outback sedan. With AWD, aggressive styling, and great suspension this car is priced in the low 20s, the Outback offers on-road practicality with off-road capability at a bargain price. Jeep's Grand Cherokee and Toyota's Land Cruiser have the high end of the SUV covered but the thing that makes the outback so attractive is the price and the gas mileage. With those two factors, it's a bargain in good or bad economic times.
