The Matrix is a joint project with GM, sharing the basic design with the upcoming Pontiac Vibe. The Toyota/GM joint project started in December 1984 when the jointly established company NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing) at the GM's ex-Fremont factory site in California, started to produce Chevrolet Nova.
