The 300ZX was the continuation of the Datsun Z series of cars which began with the 240z in 1970. Datsun officially changed their name in 1984, to Nissan because the Datsun name was associated with Japanese fighter planes they manufactured during WWII. It was hurting their image in the ever expanding American Market. The original idea behind the 240Z was a cheap, reliable, fun sporty car, which it is. Today many sports cars including the 300zx are modelled upon the 240z. Most sports cars go this route today, including RX7s, Supras and MR2s.

All those small reliable sports cars are out of production due to low profit margins. This happened to every car except the supra because as the Japaneese economy shrank in the ninties they charged more for these cars and didn't sell enough of them. The 300ZX was released in1984, and continued with only minor body changes through 1989, when it was replaced by the last Z as a 1990 model, also called the 300ZX
